Signs your dental implant is failing or infected

Six Signs Your Dental Implant Is Infected or Failing

Infections are the most common problem that people experience after the dental implant procedure. Peri-implantits is a common type of infection. It is a type of gum disease. If it is not treated, then it can lead to bone loss, inflammation and implant failure. Bacteria causes implant infections. You can develop an infection immediately after you get dental implants or months after you get them. However, in some cases, it takes years for the infection to develop.

You are more likely to develop an infection if your dental specialist used dental implants that were not premium brands. An infection is more likely to develop if the material is poor-quality.

If you have dental implants and suspect that you may have an infection, then you will need to watch out for the following symptoms.

1) Bad Taste in Your Mouth/Bad Breath

If low-quality implants are used and they get infected, then they will smell. This will cause you to develop bad breath and a bad taste in your mouth. Brushing and flossing may freshen your breath. However, if it does not work, then it is time for you to see a dentist. You should also see a dentist if you taste anything out of the ordinary.

2) Bleeding and Pus

If you have pus and bleeding around your gums, then you most likely have an infection. Many people only have bleeding while they are brushing and flossing. However, this is still something that you should be concerned about. Even though gum bleeding is often ignored, it may be a sign of an implant infection.

3) Fever or Pain

You may have pain in the area if you have a bacterial infection. You may also develop a fever as your body attempts to fight off the infection.

4) Chewing Problems

If your dental implants are not stable, then you will likely have problems chewing. Titanium implants allow you to chew as you normally would because they are bonded with your jawbone and gums.

5) Swollen or Red Gums

Red and swollen gums are a sign of a dental implant infection. Even if your gums do not look swollen, they may feel swollen when you touch them.

6) Loose Implant

Low-quality implant material is much more likely to lead to an infection. If the implant is wobbly, loose and feels like it is going to fall out, then it most likely has an infection. You will need to get your implant replaced with one that is made from better quality material if you still have bone for it.

If you are experiencing any of the aforementioned symptoms, then you will need to get in touch with the prosthodontist team at Implantation Dental Center immediately. An infected implant can cause severe damage to your mouth if it is not treated right away. Replacing and treating an infected implant with quality materials can fix your pain, prevent further dental issues, and improve the appearance of your smile.

  2. Ursula Rowbotham

I had 4 implants spaced out in an upper front bridge of 9 units on 1 Dec 2021. Since then I have had immediate loss of taste, at the same time permanent bad taste in my mouth. II cannot eat anything that needs chewing (meat, bread) can only eat mashed bananas or grapes, cooked apple. I have to put all soups in the food processor, basically can only eat ‘babyfood’. The implantologist just shrugs his shoulders. denies all responsibility. I have become so desperate and unhappy and my life is so miserable. Whom can I turn to?
