Dental Implants – Around Since 600 AD!

Adults experience tooth loss when they have neglected their teeth and gums or practiced unhealthy lifestyle. Bad oral hygiene significantly increases your chances of decay or damaging gum disease. While diets high in sugar can eventually lead to tooth decay, other factors increase the risk of developing gum diseases such as genetics, smoking, and lack of control in glucose levels for patients with diabetes.

The medical term for “Destructive Gum Disease” is Periodontal Disease; its the number one cause of tooth loss. It’s also the most common chronic inflammatory disease. Periodontitis is a condition in which the gums pull away from the teeth and form spaces. These spaces have the potential to become infected which then causes the immune system to attack the bones and tissues supporting the teeth.

The loss of a tooth can be, but there are several tooth replacement options. The most tooth replacement option today is the dental implant. Dental implants help millions of people to restore their smile and their dental health.

Ancient Dental Implants

Contrary to popular belief, screw-in teeth are not a feat of modern dentistry. Archaeological evidence suggests the ancient Chinese used bamboo pegs to replace lost teeth. The purpose of the first implants was much the same as today – to restore a beautiful smile. Of course, the dental implants way back when were made from other materials and not titanium like the dental implants made today. Evidence of dental implants dates all the way back to the times of the Mayas — that’s as early as 600 AD! Likewise, ancient Egyptian and Celtic remains have unveiled their use of dental implants made from precious metals, ivory, and even other human teeth.

Modern Dental Implants

In 1952 Swedish orthopedic surgeon by the name of Per-Ingvar Brånemark, while studying the biology of bone healing, found that implants were extremely difficult to remove from titanium cylinders. The cylinders appeared to have integrated with the surrounding bone after healing had occurred. The titanium seemed to attract bone formation onto its surface in what is now called osseointegration.

In 1981 Brånemark finally published his findings and new implants as we know them were born. Now there are over 500 different types of dental implant available.
