There are a few essential facts to understand to maintain the health of your gums and reduce the risk of diseases that can develop.

Staying Hydrated

The amount of water that you consume each day will affect how healthy your gums are over time. Saliva is the body’s natural defense against gingivitis but can only be produced by consuming water. Your body can combat bacteria in the mouth if enough saliva is present in the mouth. It will even rinse out bacteria that is ready to adhere to your teeth. Health experts recommend drinking an average of eight glasses of water each day to stay hydrated.

Staying hydrated is also known to reduce the risk of periodontal diseases by keeping the gums free of bacteria that is present.


Saltwater is also a natural defense against bacteria that can threaten your gum health. Consider rinsing your mouth out with a mixture of salt and water to remove any buildup of plaque that is present. Saltwater can also alleviate inflammation that is present and will offer relief if the gums are sore. Swish the warm saltwater around for at least 60 seconds for a thorough cleaning. You can use the mixture twice each day to eliminate severe cases of inflammation.
