Dental Implant Failure – Why does it happen and how will I know?

Dental implants were introduced in the dental industry over 40 years ago. Back then the whole restorative procedure had a totally different meaning.

The introduction of the dental implants was the most clever move to restore missing teeth. It is the closest as having a natural tooth without touching the teeth that are next to the one that needs to be replaced.

After many years of research and investigations, dental implants are considered the healthiest and highest quality method when we want to replace damaged or lost teeth. If you take good care of them they can last forever.

Now, like everything in life… there is a balance. Like the ying-yang. There are certain factors that could happen for a dental implant procedure to fail, even though is not common it could happen due to a bad infection or an important quantity of bone loss due to poor surgical technique, overload or not getting the adequate forces of mastication under control.

There are some infections that are developed around the implant and inside the gums, it is well know as peri-implantitis. That’s why it is so important to have a good oral health care, a routine dental hygiene to avoid risks of failures or infections once the implant is integrated.

It’s also possible that the implant may fail to integrate with your existing jawbone. This usually happens in patients with low jawbone density or in patients who suffer dental trauma after the implant procedure.

What are the symptoms of dental implant failure? How do you deal with that situation?

There are several possible reasons that could cause implant failure. The most common signs would be when you start to experience severe pain or discomfort in or around your dental implant, also it could be reflected if your gums are swollen or inflamed, or if they start feeling loose.

If it happens and it is detected earlier, your specialist could simply focused on cleaning or grafting the area. When the specialist detects a peri-implant infection with mobility he will have to remove the implant and give it sometime for a proper healing process.

If detected and treated early, peri-implantitis have a positive prognosis.

In cases of damage bone around the implant, a bone graft is required. Dental implants can only be placed in spots on the jawbone that have sufficient bone. If jawbone is lost or the bone is damaged the treatment will involve a bone graft.

It is important as a patient to follow the prescriptions, the antibiotics, pain killers and let the doctor know if you might experiencing severe pain.

For some patients, especially the most sensitive ones… just thinking of a surgical dental implant procedure may produce an advanced psychological feeling of pain and consider it a scary procedure. It all can be prevented by giving your mouth an excellent and high quality oral hygiene. Use dental floss, brush, and use an alcohol free mouthrinse. Some changes to your diet may also be beneficial. Avoid hard candy and other foods that are rough on teeth.

Also, keep in mind that you have to schedule a visit for a follow up appointment with your dentist every 3 months. And a regular cleaning every 6 months. If you have fixed permanent teeth the time for cleaning them will be between 1 hour to one hour and a half.
